There are some who have not realized that they can talk their way into a place of faith if they need healing for your body. There is a marvelous truth here concerning the dynamics of trusting God and understanding how His Word works in our spirits. Faith comes by hearing and it doesn’t matter whom you are hearing from. Whether you are hearing your pastor teach, or your Sunday School teacher, or a favorite faithful minister of God’s timeless Word on TV or radio, faith comes by hearing. There are so many ways you can hear the Word in this digital age. You can listen to healing scriptures on YouTube. Why, there are even Bible apps that will play the Word for your hearing. I have several audio book versions of the Word of God. I play them in my car as I am traveling hither and thither. But in this podcast, we are going to look in on a particular woman and how she schooled herself into faith. We’re going to come to know a wonderful truth that you can build yourself up in faith by hearing the Word of God come out of your own mouth. Faith comes by hearing. How You Can Talk Your Way Into Faith and Healing, that’s our focus on this week’s Light on Life.

Prayer
- Well again, welcome.
- Let’s pray.
Father God, thank you for the Word, your Word, the Bible that contains your thoughts, and your ways, and your opinions. Help us today to think like you think, to trust and obey your Word. Open to our spirit’s an undersatnding of what faith is, how it works, and how it comes. We ask you for that in Jesus Name, Amen.
- Now with that prayer, here is the Illustration of the Day.
Now don’t push the term faith at me,” a lawyer told me [one gentleman] bluntly at a dinner party recently. “The Word is like a red flag.” “Why such a violent reaction?” I asked. “Well, because I object to the way Christianity uses faith as a theological gimmick to duck all rational problems. At every point where a man wants to understand, they say, ‘You just have to have faith,’ or ‘Reason can only go so far.’ I resent it! I see nothing wrong with ‘Prove it to me first, then I’ll believe.’” As we talked, I realized it had never occurred to this intelligent, well–educated man that in his everyday life he often follows the [exact] reverse order of believing and accepting first, then acting. Every day he lives, he acts on faith many times with little or no proof at all, and yet he does not feel that he is being impractical [in these matters.] This person shows faith every time he boards an airplane. He believes [the plane] will take him to his destination, but he has no proof of that. This man entrusts life itself to several unknown mechanics who have serviced the plane he is flying as well as to a pilot he knows nothing [about.] Each time he eats a restaurant meal, he trusts an unknown cook and eats the food, believing it is safe. [How does he know?] This same man enters a hospital for an operation and signs a release giving permission for surgery. He shows faith in an anesthetist whose name he does not even know and a surgeon who holds in his hands the power of life or death. [You get the idea? We are continual using faith in our natural world.] It is obvious that if we were we to insist on having the “proof first, and then faith” [and using that] order in our daily lives, organized life as we know it would grind to a screeching halt. [So, think about it.] Since life together among men is possible only by faith, as we act out trust in other people, should it not seem [reasonable] that the same law applies to our life with God?1
Talking Your Way Into Faith and Healing: Laying Out the Case
- So you see, we are trusting all the time — we are using faith all the time.
- Life is wired to be lived by faith.
- Now there are two realms — spiritual and natural.
- Faith is the way of operating in both realms.
- If you desire any action out of God, that action will come out of your heart trusting God.
- Now before we continue on, let’s lay out the basic premise for this podcast.
- Today, we want to see from the Word of God that it is possible to talk your way into faith [in the spiritual arena] and subsequently healing from sickness and disease.
- There are 23 individual cases of healing under the ministry of Jesus.
- So far, in previous podcasts, we have covered three of them, the Leper, the Centurion’s Servant, and the Syrophoenician Woman’s daughter.
- In each of those cases, we looked at the methods of healing that Jesus used.
- Now, you can use the same method that Jesus used.
- You know we did a podcast on ‘Ministering Healing Like Jesus Did.’
- Yes, you can minister the same way Jesus ministered.
- Jesus ministered by the Spirit of God coming upon Him and you can minster that way as well.
- Why would you want to do it any other way?
- So far, in those previous podcasts, we saw that laying on of hands, speaking the Word and agreeing with the will of God were all pathways to healing.
- We also took note that in these three cases, Jesus didn’t pray a single prayer to God the Father asking Him to heal the people.
- He used other methods.
- Of course, the Father that dwelled in Jesus, was instrumental in these healings.
John 14:10 (ESV) — 10 Do you not believe that I am in the Father and the Father is in me? The words that I say to you I do not speak on my own authority, but the Father who dwells in me does his works.
- Now, I put links in the podcast notes so if you missed listening to any of these previous podcasts on healing, you can go to the notes and get quick, convenient access to them.
- Of course, if you use a podcasting app like the one Apple has on their devices or one like Player FM, or Pocket Casts, you can subscribe and you won’t miss a podcast.
- It’s pretty easy to subscribe, just open your podcasting app and search for the words ‘Light on Life.’
- Today, we are going to look at Jesus encounter with the Woman with the Issue of Blood.
- Three of the gospel writers record this woman’s significant encounter with Jesus.
- Mark’s gospel has the most details concerning what happened and so that’s the version we are going to use.
- Go to Mark chapter five.
Mark 5:25–34 (ESV) — 25 And there was a woman who had had a discharge of blood for twelve years, 26 and who had suffered much under many physicians, and had spent all that she had, and was no better but rather grew worse. 27 She had heard the reports about Jesus and came up behind him in the crowd and touched his garment. 28 For she said, “If I touch even his garments, I will be made well.” 29 And immediately the flow of blood dried up, and she felt in her body that she was healed of her disease. 30 And Jesus, perceiving in himself that power had gone out from him, immediately turned about in the crowd and said, “Who touched my garments?” 31 And his disciples said to him, “You see the crowd pressing around you, and yet you say, ‘Who touched me?’ ” 32 And he looked around to see who had done it. 33 But the woman, knowing what had happened to her, came in fear and trembling and fell down before him and told him the whole truth. 34 And he said to her, “Daughter, your faith has made you well; go in peace, and be healed of your disease.”
Talking Your Way Into Faith and Healing: The Condition of This Woman
- Now, we know quite a bit about this person that was marvelously healed this day in Jesus ministry thanks to the Holy Spirit working through Mark.
- We have lots of details.
- As we said, three out of the four gospel writers record this healing.
- Matthew has it in chapter nine, verses twenty thru twenty-two.
- Luke has it in chapter eight verses forty-three thru forty-eight and of course we are looking at Mark’s version.
- So, what do we know?
- We know, there was a woman.
- We know this woman had a discharge of blood for twelve years.
- I’m going to talk to the ladies listening to this podcast for a moment.
- ‘Ladies, can you imagine a ‘blood flowing period’ running for twelve years?’
- I know us guys can’t imagine that.
- If it ran for twelve days, you would be getting concerned wouldn’t you?
- Normally, a woman’s cycle is just a few days not years like this woman.
- We can deduce this woman’s misery, weakness, and emaciation solely from that fact.
- But there’s more to this woman’s plight.
Talking Your Way Into Faith and Healing: Doctors Unable to Help Provide A Cure
- And, with that thought, here is the Historical Background of the Day.
The Talmud is the central text of Rabbinic Judaism and the primary source of Jewish religious law and theology. Until modern times in nearly all Jewish communities, the Talmud was the centerpiece of Jewish cultural life and was foundational to “all Jewish thought and aspirations”, serving also as “the guide for the daily life” of Jews.2
- The Talmud has two parts to it: the Mishnah, which was a commentary on the Torah and the Gemara which was a commentary on the Mishnah and so it was a commentary on a commentary.
Well, the Talmud itself gives eleven cures for such a trouble [as this women with the Issue of Blood had]. Some of them are tonics and astringents [which are constricting tissues and canals] , but some of them are sheer superstitions like carrying the ashes of an ostrich egg in a linen rag in summer and a cotton rag in winter; or carrying a barley corn which had been found in the dung of a white she-ass.3
- How’s that for a cure?
- What would you do if your doctor wrote you a prescription instructing you to carry corn found in the dung of a white she-ass?
- How does the pharmacist’s fill that prescription?
- Would it even be covered by your health insurance?
- Of course, I am just being silly here.
- But, Jewish literature contains some interesting stuff on the subject of doctors.
- I mean there are passages [in the Talmud] that portray ‘physicians’ negatively.4
- Now, the fact that this woman had suffered much under many physicians was just where first century medicine and doctors were in their knowledge of disease.
- I’m sure they did the best they could.
- But, the best they could do only added more pain, more discomfort, and more misery to this woman’s already pain filled existence.
- The CEV Translation of the Bible, which stands for the Contemporary English Version, puts it like this.
Mark 5:26 (CEV) — 26 she had gone to many doctors, and they had not done anything except cause her a lot of pain’ [CEV],
- I mean twelve years — can you imagine waking up everyday to another day of hopelessness, to another day of pain and weakness, to another day where the supposed cure prescribed by the doctor was worse than the problem?
- On and on it went day after day, month after hopeless month, year after dizzying year.
- Now, let’s talk about the life expectancy of people in the first century.
- We’re talking about 40 years of age.
- In the modern world today, we’re talking twice that — in the 80’s.
- So, if this young woman hit puberty around 12 or 13 years and add to that the 12 years that her flow hadn’t stopped, this woman was sick 1/2 of her adult life.
- Are you in that case today?
- Do you have a medical situation that’s getting no better fast no matter what doctor you see?
- Have you been sick for a large part of your adult life?
- There’s hope for you dear heart just keep reading what happened with this woman.
- Because what happened to her can happen to you!
- God put this story in the gospels just for you!
Talking Your Way Into Faith and Healing: This Woman Experienced Lawful Segregation.
- So, we talked about the womans condition.
- We talked about how the doctors added to the problem, but there is even more misery that this woman experinced and that’s social segregation.
Leviticus 15:25,31 (ESV) — “If a woman has a discharge of blood for many days, not at the time of her menstrual impurity, or if she has a discharge beyond the time of her impurity, all the days of the discharge she shall continue in uncleanness. As in the days of her impurity, she shall be unclean.
- Now drop to verse 31.
31 “Thus you shall keep the people of Israel separate from their uncleanness, lest they die in their uncleanness by defiling my tabernacle that is in their midst.”
- One thing we are not told is why this woman had the condition that she did.
- Why was her menstrual flow continuous?
- What caused that?
- Was there something physically wrong in her uterus?
- Did she have a sexually transmitted disease?
- There was a lot of that in the first century.
- It wasn’t the 1940’s that they found a cure to these diseases — that cure was peniclin.
- They have different drug now as of 2012, ceftriaxone.
- They had to switch because of ‘antibotic resistance.’
- Now, where this woman with the issue of blood was concerned, we don’t know what the source of her condition was.
- But if it was the later, a sexually transmitted disease, then maybe that would help us to understand why the Lord said that people with these conditions were to be viewed as unclean.
- We just read that in Leviticus.
- Understand, if she had a sexually transmitted disease, it wouldn’t mean that she was an immoral, loose woman.
- She could have gotten the disease from her husband.
- But, either way it doesn’t matter — she still experienced lawful segregation for 12 years.
- Month after month, year after year, people viewed her as unclean.
- What hopelessness.
- Knowing the ‘why’ of this woman’s condition, would make her ‘touching of Jesus garment’ even more significant.
- Because Jesus didn’t rebuke her.
- Jesus didn’t condemn her.
- He didn’t say to her ‘go and sin no more.’
- How many times do we hear people try to imply that ‘you’re sick because of some sin you committed?
- This woman found healing instead of condemnation.
- Jesus lifted her out of her state.
Talking Your Way Into Faith and Healing: Poverty and Sickness
- But, there is even more woe for this woman’s.
- I mean talk about a ‘train-wreck’ of a situation.
- Not only was she sick, with increased pain from the medical community and banished to loneliness [how did she pass her days, I wonder], but she was living in abject poverty.
and had spent all that she had.
- Now, the majority of people in the first century were poor anyway.
- But whatever little that this woman had, she no longer had it.
- Because of the constant visit to doctors, this woman’s finances were obliterated.
- And it would have been different if she had gotten some results from laying out all that cash, she was no better but grew worse.
- You know poverty and sickness often go hand in hand.
- Which should you clue you in even more to the fact that sickness is not the will of God.
- God’s will is that you prosper.
Joshua 1:8 (ESV) — 8 This Book of the Law shall not depart from your mouth, but you shall meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do according to all that is written in it. For then you will make your way prosperous, and then you will have good success.
- Ask yourself, why would God tell you how to be successful if He didn’t want you to have it?
- That would be pretty strange wouldn’t it?
- So if sickness robs people of prosperity — something that God wants you to have, how can it be the will of God?
- Can you grasp the condition of this woman now?
- So much was wrong here.
- First the condition, then the doctors who piled on top of the condition, then the segregation, and to top it off, the financial ruin which came.
Talking Your Way Into Faith and Healing: The Hearing Part
- But, a marvelous thing happened.
- She heard about Jesus.
Mark 5:27 (ESV) — 27 She had heard the reports about Jesus and came up behind him in the crowd and touched his garment.
- Now, there is something here that’s not so apparent from reading the English.
- If you happen to have an Interlinear Greek New Testament, and I understand that this is something the vast majority of Jesus followers either don’t have or don’t want to have.
- But, if you happen to have one, or how about this — I put a link in the podcast notes for a free on line English to Greek Interlinear.5 look up Mark 5:27.
- When you do, you will find that there is word that the translators did not include in the translation of Mark 5:27.
- There is a word ‘THE’ missing.
- ‘the’ — t-h-e, is missing right in front of Jesus name.
- The literal translation should be “having heard of the things concerning the Jesus.”
- The word ‘the’ is known in grammar as an article.
- In grammar, articles are words that show whether a noun is general or specific.
- The definite article appearing before the name “Jesus,” marks Him out as a PARTICULAR Jesus.
- The English name “Jesus” is the transliteration of the Hebrew name “Joshua” and was a very common name in that part of the world.
- I read somewhere that they had documented at least seventy different people who all had the same name at this time.
- So, there were a lot of Jesus’s running around.
- But, there was only one ‘THE JESUS.’
- Jesus was so famous because He was healing people left and right that the gospel writer had to use the word ‘THE’ to distinguish Him from all the others.6
- There is no one like Jesus.
- When this disease ridden woman and her truck load of problems heard about ‘THE JESUS’ — Oh, I like that.
- He is THE JESUS — He is ‘THE MAN,’ ‘THE SON OF MAN,’ ‘THE SON OF GOD’ THE ANOINTED ONE, THE CHRIST, THE SAVIOR OF THE WORLD.
- When this woman heard about ‘THE JESUS,’ she said something.
- Ah, now we get to it.
- Now, we get to how YOU can talk your way into faith and healing.
- What was it that this woman heard?
- You know it had to be something good.
- It had to be something positive, and righteous!
- Something that was hopeful.
- What did she hear?
- I’ll tell what she heard.
Acts 10:38 (ESV) — 38 how God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and with power. He went about doing good and healing all who were oppressed by the devil, for God was with him.
- When she heard about THE JESUS, she said something.
Mark 5:28 (ESV) — 28 For she said, “If I touch even his garments, I will be made well.”
- There is something significant here that will help you to know that you can talk your way into faith and healing no matter how awful your situation is.
- This woman not only said ‘If I touch even his garments, I will be made well,’ she kept saying those words to herself.
- That’s what the Greek grammar points to here.
- And with that thought here is the Quote of the Day.
- This quote is out of book called Wuest’s Word Studies from the Greek New Testament: For the English Reader.
- This is what Wuest says.
The verb is imperfect. She kept saying as she pressed through the crowd, either to herself or to others.7
- That’s what I what you to get today.
- When you hear the good news, keep saying it.
- Keep saying it to yourself.
- Keep saying it to others.
- You can talk your way into faith.
- Your mouth always leads you into faith and it’s your mouth that leads you out of it.
- James three tells you that.
- You see faith comes by hearing.
Romans 10:17 (ESV) — 17 So faith comes from hearing, and hearing through the word of Christ.
- It doesn’t matter whether you hear someone else speak the Word or you speak it yourself.
- Faith comes by hearing either way.
- So, you can talk your way into faith.
- If you are sick today, start saying to yourself, ‘Jesus is my healer.’
- ‘By His stripes I was healed.’
- ‘He took my infirmities.’
- ‘He bore my sicknesses.’
- ‘With long life will He satisfy me and show me His salvation.’
- ‘Lord, I’m not satisfied and since I’m not, I am going to keep quoting the Word.’
- Then start it all over again.
- You keep doing this like this woman did and faith will flow out of you like a flood of waters.
- Glory to God!
Talking Your Way Into Faith and Healing: The Result
- What was the result of this continual saying?
- Her saying led to action, the action of pressing through a crowd of people that she was not supposed to be no where near because of her uncleanness.
- The result of her speaking and acting?
Mark 5:29 (ESV) — 29 And immediately the flow of blood dried up, and she felt in her body that she was healed of her disease. 30 And Jesus, perceiving in himself that power had gone out from him, immediately turned about in the crowd and said, “Who touched my garments?”
- Now, we are out of time today.
- But, we are not finished yet.
- I want you to see healing from Jesus perspective and you find that in verse 30.
- Let’s talk about verse thirty in our next podcast.
Now, Father God thank you for putting this story in the gosepls, so we can see how to talk our way to victory. We praise you for that in Jesus Name, Amen.
- Get to talking.
- Talk the Word.
- Put it before your eyes — stick it in your ears and allow God’s Word to flow out of you.
- How You Can Talk Your Way Into Faith and Healing.
- You guys have a great God week and we will see you next time for another edition of Light on Life.
