Why Your Identifying with Jesus Destroys Insecurity

People identify with the noise of inferiority, with the noise of insecurity, with the noise of a lack of self-esteem. But, you don’t have to have that identity because God has carved one out especially for you.  You have a choice about the voice in your head. You can choose to go with what God’s Word says about you.

God Has Given Us a Sense of Identity

  • Have you ever seen Clark Kent jump into the phone booth?
  • Who is Clark Kent before he goes into that booth?
    • A whiny weany milk toast guy, full of insecurity and doubt.
  • But who is Clark Kent after he comes out of the booth with a shining ‘S’ on his chest?
    • That is who he really is.
    • Superman.
  • That is who you are honey, if you choose to believe it. God’s superman.
  • Do you know what the ‘S’ on your chest stands for?
  • Do you know what the S is on the chest of your spirit man?
    • ‘S’ stands for SAVED
    • ‘S’ stands for SANCTIFIED
    • ‘S’ stands for SPIRITUAL
    • ‘S’ stands for STRONG
  • You can cut through the noise by understanding who you are in Christ in the phone booth
  • You need to know who you are in Him.
  • Here is a partial list from the Word of God. Scroll over the references with your mouse and the verse will pop up for you. Read these verses. Think on them. Soak in these thoughts. Allow them to drop into your heart.

John 20:22 (KJV)
22 And when he had said this, he breathed on them, and saith unto them, Receive ye the Holy Ghost:

  • Before Jesus breathed on the disciples and said “Receive the Holy Ghost”, there had never been a man like the new creation man.
  • Before this time, men were spiritually dead. They were full of death and covered with insecurity.
  • But now that you are in Christ, the old man, the old life, the old way of thinking, the old insecurities have passed away. There is now a new man. A new creation. A new race of men.

2 Corinthians 5:17 (KJV)
17 Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new.

Become Familiar with the New You

Philemon 6 (KJV)
6 that the communication of thy faith may become effectual by the acknowledging of every good thing which is in you in Christ Jesus.

  • Become familiar with what is in you.
  • Acquaint yourself with the ‘good things’ God has placed in your heart.
  • Look at these three words, communication, effectual, and acknowledging.
  • What do they mean?

Definitions:

  • communication – kononia – sharing or communion
  • effectual – active or powerful in action
  • acknowledging – epignosis (ep-ig’-no-sis); recognition, i.e. (by implication) full discernment, acknowledgement: precise and correct knowledge;
  • Inserting these three definitions back into Philemon 6 and this is how it reads.
    • “The things that God has placed in you become active and powerful when you recognize them and have full precise and correct knowledge about them.”
  • The opposite is also true. What God has placed in you becomes weak and ineffective when you are ignorant of them.
  • You simply cannot tap into what you don’t know you have.

The Principle of Identification

  • Now, let’s talk about the biblical principle of substitution and identification as a means of helping us to overcome insecurity.
  • If you want to get a better handle on understanding who you are in Him, then become familiar with what these two words mean.
  • Understanding these two words will shed light on helping you know who you really are.
  • The principle of identification states that we are one with Christ.
  • This is a nice statement but what does this mean?

DEFINITION: identification – to consider and treat as the same or when two become utterly one

  • Marriage is an example of identification.
  • Husband and wife become identified as one.
  • They have one name.
  • They are financially and legally one entity though they are physically two separate beings.
  • They are ‘one flesh’ identified together.
  • In spiritual terms, identification reads like this: “Jesus became what we were so that we might become what He is.”

2 Corinthians 5:21 (KJV)
21 For he hath made him to be sin for us, who knew no sin; that we might be made the righteousness of God in him.

  • Jesus identified with sin so that we might identify with righteousness.
  • Therefore my identity is the righteousness of God.
  • Once I have come to Him, “I am no longer just a sinner saved by grace” as so many refer to themselves as.

Galatians 1:4 (KJV)
4 Who gave himself for our sins, that he might deliver us from this present evil world, according to the will of God and our Father:

  • Jesus identified with sin so that we might identify with deliverance.
  • Therefore my identity is a delivered child of God.
  • You can take each one of those ‘I am’ and ‘In Him’ statements in the list above and realize your true identity.

The Principle of Substitution

DEFINITION: substitution – when one takes the place of another

  • Substitution is seen in athletic contests.
  • One player substitutes for another.
  • When the substitute is in the game, it is just as if he is the starting player.
  • If the substitute tilts the score so that the game is won, the whole team gets the score.
  • The substitute on the field wins and the player that was substituted for also wins.

1 Corinthians 15:3 (KJV)
3 For I delivered unto you first of all that which I also received, how that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures;

  • You see the work of substitution here.
  • Jesus substituted and took my place and died for my sins.
  • Jesus gained the victory and because He is my substitute, I have the victory also.
  • Now here is both substitution and identification together.

[Tweet “Jesus gained the victory and because He is my substitute, I have the victory also.”]

Philippians 2:7–8 (KJV)
7 But made himself of no reputation, and took upon him the form of a servant, and was made in the likeness of men: 8 And being found in fashion as a man, he humbled himself, and became obedient unto death, even the death of the cross.

  • The phrase ‘taking upon Himself the form of a servant’ is identification.
  • The phrase ‘becoming obedient to death on the cross’ is substitution.

Hebrews 2:17 (KJV)
17 Wherefore in all things it behoved him to be made like unto his brethren, that he might be a merciful and faithful high priest in things pertaining to God, to make reconciliation for the sins of the people.

  • ‘Being made like His brethren’ is identification.
  • ‘Reconciling the sins of the people’ is substitution.
  • What all of these verses on identification and substitution show us is this truth: because He became utterly one with you, because He identified with you, He could take your place.  He could pay the price of your transgressions by substituting Himself for you.
  • You put that all together into this succinct statement that will absolutely annihilate the inside noise of insecurity and inferiority.
  • He became what you are so you can become what He is.

Call to Action:
