#S2-035: Why Calvary is the Home of the Double Cure [Podcast]

Healing for the Sick God's Way

The Shaw Pocket Bible Handbook says “In the Bible it is God who brings salvation from temporal as well as spiritual ills. Thus in the Gospels, referring to his miraculous healings, Jesus sometimes says, “Your faith has saved you,” meaning “healed you” (Luke 18:42 KJV). Characteristically, the term refers to salvation from sin (Rom. 1:16; 1 Thess. 5:9). Salvation means the decisive defeat of sin on the cross, but also victory over evil in a believer’s daily life.” 1 Why is this so? The answer can be found by an exhaustive look at the famous redemption chapter of Isaiah 53.

This is part three of the Series entitled, ‘Healing for the Sick God’s Way’. You can find Part One ‘How to Get Faith for Healing’ here and Part Two ‘How to Put Yourself in the Word for Healing’ here.

Isaiah 53:3–5 (KJV)
3 He is despised and rejected of men; A man of sorrows, and acquainted with grief: And we hid as it were our faces from him; He was despised, and we esteemed him not. 4 Surely he hath borne our griefs, And carried our sorrows: Yet we did esteem him stricken, Smitten of God, and afflicted. 5 But he was wounded for our transgressions, He was bruised for our iniquities: The chastisement of our peace was upon him; And with his stripes we are healed.

Four Important Isaiah 53:4 Definitions

‘Griefs’ in Verse 4

  • The word ‘griefs’ in verse four is the Hebrew word ‘kholee’ which means sickness or suffering 2
  • The word ‘kholee’ is used in many places in scripture to refer to physical sickness.

Deuteronomy 7:15 (KJV)
15 And the Lord will take away from thee all sickness, and will put none of the evil diseases of Egypt, which thou knowest, upon thee; but will lay them upon all them that hate thee.

  • The word sickness in Deuteronomy 7:15 is the same word ‘kholee’ in Isaiah 53:4 translated griefs.
  • Griefs sounds poetic but sickness is the translation.
  • In the following verses, ‘kholee’ is translated sickness, sick or illness.
    • Deuteronomy 28:61
    • Deuteronomy 28:59
    • Deuteronomy 28:61
    • 1 Kings 17:17
    • 2 Kings 1:2
    • 2 Kings 8:8
    • 2 Kings 8:9
    • 2 Kings 13:14
    • Psalm 41:3
    • Ecclesiastes 5:17
    • Isaiah 1:5
    • Isaiah 38:9
    • Jeremiah 6:7
    • Hosea 5:13

2 Chronicles 16:12 (KJV)
12 And Asa in the thirty and ninth year of his reign was diseased in his feet, until his disease was exceeding great: yet in his disease he sought not to the Lord, but to the physicians.

  • The word disease connected to King Asa is again the word ‘kholee’.
  • The same is true in these verses.
    • 2 Chronicles 21:15
    • 2 Chronicles 21:18
    • 2 Chronicles 21:19
  • The only verse ‘kholee’ is translated as griefs is Isaiah 53:3, and 4.
  • The translation should read “Surely he has borne our sicknesses.”

‘Borne’ in Verse 4

  • The Hebrew word borne, ‘nasa’, means to carry or to bear.
  • It means is to endure something unpleasant or difficult on behalf of someone else.

Leviticus 5:1 (KJV)
1 And if a soul sin, and hear the voice of swearing, and is a witness, whether he hath seen or known of it; if he do not utter it, then he shall bear his iniquity.

  • The word ‘bear’ in Leviticus 5:1 is the same word ‘borne’ in Isaiah 53:4.
  • The word ‘bear’ in Leviticus 5:1 is not used in the sense of sicknesses but it’s used in the sense of sin or bearing iniquity.
  • The word ‘borne’ is also the same verb found in Isaiah 53:12.

Isaiah 53:12 (KJV)
12 Therefore will I divide him a portion with the great, And he shall divide the spoil with the strong; Because he hath poured out his soul unto death: And he was numbered with the transgressors; And he bare the sin of many, And made intercession for the transgressors.

  • Jesus bore or carried our sins at Calvary according to Isaiah 53:12.
  • There is no argument here among believers in Jesus.
  • Jesus bore our sins, your sins and mine.
  • The same word, the same verb is used of sicknesses in Isiah 53:4.
    • So in Isaiah 53:12, you have sins.
    • In Isaiah 53:4, you have sicknesses both with the same word ‘bore’.
  • For our study and our focus, the word ‘borne’ is used for both sin and sickness.
  • Jesus ‘bore’ our sins and He bore our sicknesses.
  • And, He did it all at the same place, Calvary.
  • What Isaiah is declaring in chapter fifty-three by the Spirit of God, is a manifestation of the Word of Wisdom and the gift of prophecy working together.
  • He is fore-telling everything which occurred at Calvary.
    • At Calvary, Jesus bore your sins.
    • At Calvary, Jesus bore your sicknesses.
    • He took care of both things at the same place.
  • That’s why Calvary is the home of the double cure.
  • Jesus cured your sins and He also cured your diseases.

‘Sorrows’ in Verse Four

  • There’s another word we want to look at in verse four, the word sorrows.
  • Surely he hath borne our griefs or sicknesses, and carried our sorrows, the scripture says.
  • The word ‘sorrows’ in verse four is the Hebrew word ‘makob’.
    • It means pain or suffering.

Job 33:19 (KJV)
19 He is chastened also with pain upon his bed, And the multitude of his bones with strong pain:

  • The word pain in Job 33:19 is this same word ‘makob’ used in Isaiah 53:4.

Jeremiah 51:8 (KJV)
8 Babylon is suddenly fallen and destroyed: Howl for her; Take balm for her pain, If so be she may be healed.

  • Jeremiah speaks figuratively using the model of physical pain and healing from that pain in referencing the nation of Babylon.
  • The word ‘sorrows’ in Isaiah 53:4 is the word pain and it’s used that way in other scriptures in the Bible.
  • So according to the King James version, Jesus carried our sorrows which means He carried our pains.

‘Carried’ in Verse Four

  • The word is the Hebrew word ‘sabal’ and in this verse in Isaiah it means the exact same thing as the word ‘borne’ that is to endure something unpleasant or difficult on behalf of someone else.

Lamentations 5:7 (LEB)
7 Our fathers have sinned, they are no more; we bear their iniquity.

  • The word bear in Lamenations 5:7 is this same word ‘sabal’, the Hebrew word for carried.
  • The Jewish fathers sinned but the next generation carried the effect of that sin.
  • Jesus carried our sorrows. He endured the unpleasant and difficult sufferings of Calvary on behalf of someone else. On behalf of you.
  • There’s another wonderful verse in Isaiah with this same word ‘sabal’ or carried.

Isaiah 46:4 (KJV)
4 And even to your old age I am he; And even to hoar hairs will I carry you: I have made, and I will bear; Even I will carry, and will deliver you.

  • God’s promise to you is ‘He will carry you and deliver you.’
  • Jesus carried your sorrows, your pains. He did it on your behalf.
  • So now, if we take these two definitions for ‘griefs’ and ‘sorrows’ and plug them back into Isaiah 53:4, it effectively reads…

Isaiah 53:4 (KJV)
4 Surely he hath ‘borne for the behalf of some else our sicknesses, And carried for the behalf of some else our pains’: Yet we did esteem him stricken, Smitten of God, and afflicted.

  • When you read Isaiah 53:4 from now on, read it this way.
  • These four words griefs, sorrows, borne, and carried conveys one tremendous thought.

You don’t have to suffer the pains of sickness, because Jesus already suffered them for you.

  • He bore them for you.
  • He carried them for you.
  • Where did this all happen?
  • In the same place where Jesus was bruised for your iniquities.
  • What do we realize about sin and sickness, then?
  • Sin and sickness are Bible twins.
  • In scripture, they are linked together.
  • Meaning, in many places in the Bible, where you see one, you see the other.
  • The great question then is, ‘Did Jesus by His death on the cross also atone for bodily sickness and disease?’
  • You can see from these four words, ‘griefs’, ‘sorrows’, ‘bore’ and ‘carried’, that the answer to that is yes.

Other Examples of Sin and Sickness Bible Twins

Psalm 103:2–3 (KJV)
2 Bless the Lord, O my soul, And forget not all his benefits: 3 Who forgiveth all thine iniquities; Who healeth all thy diseases;

  • The word ‘benefit’ means reward or recompense.
  • Do you gain those rewards only when you get to heaven or, are there some rewards you can have in this life?
  • Psalm 103:2 clues us into some of those benefits.
    • Who forgives all your iniquities… and heals all your diseases.
  • You can enjoy the rewards of forgiveness for sins in this life.
    • You can enjoy fellowship with God the Father.
    • You can delight in the Presence of God.
    • You can revel in the peace and rest which are a byproduct of having a clean slate.
  • But there’s more.
  • There’s an AND.
    • Who forgives all your iniquities AND heals all your diseases.
  • One of the benefits, one of the rewards as a God believer is a well body.

1 Peter 2:24 (KJV)
24 Who his own self bare our sins in his own body on the tree, that we, being dead to sins, should live unto righteousness: by whose stripes ye were healed.

  • Again, you can see the Bible twins forgiveness from sin and healing in the same verse.
  • Jump back to Isaiah and look at the next verse.

Isaiah 53:5 (KJV)
5 But he was wounded for our transgressions, He was bruised for our iniquities: The chastisement of our peace was upon him; And with his stripes we are healed.

  • The same thread is seen in verse five of Isaiah 53.
  • He was wounded for our transgressions.
    • That’s the sin part.
    • He was bruised for iniquities. Again the sin part.
  • The chastisement of our peace was upon Him.
    • That’s the mental well part of our redemption. We haven’t spoken about that in this podcast but it’s there for you.
  • And with His stripes we are healed.
    • There’s the physical healing portion.
    • Again, the Bible twins make their appearance.

[Tweet “The great question is, ‘Did Jesus by dying on the cross, also atone for sickness and disease?’”]

Matthew 9:2–6 (KJV)
2 And, behold, they brought to him a man sick of the palsy, lying on a bed: and Jesus seeing their faith said unto the sick of the palsy; Son, be of good cheer; thy sins be forgiven thee. 3 And, behold, certain of the scribes said within themselves, This man blasphemeth. 4 And Jesus knowing their thoughts said, Wherefore think ye evil in your hearts? 5 For whether is easier, to say, Thy sins be forgiven thee; or to say, Arise, and walk? 6 But that ye may know that the Son of man hath power on earth to forgive sins, (then saith he to the sick of the palsy,) Arise, take up thy bed, and go unto thine house.

  • The word ‘behold’ means look and see.
  • What do we notice when we look and see?
    • We notice some men bringing a man sick with the palsy.
      • Palsy is where a person is lame or paralyzed in his feet or legs.
  • What did Jesus notice about this group of men?
    • The scripture said, “He saw their faith’”
  • What faith did Jesus see?
    • Faith for healing.
    • In fact it so such strong faith that they tore the roof off the man’s house where Jesus was visiting.
    • They damaged another man’s home just to get this paralytic man to Jesus.
  • Would you do this?
  • Would you be this driven to get your sick loved one to Jesus?
  • What did Jesus say about the faith that He saw in this group?
  • He said, “Son, be of good cheer; thy sins be forgiven thee.”
  • Did you get it?
    • They came to Jesus for healing.
    • They exhibiting strong faith for healing and what did the paralyzed man receive?
    • Forgiveness for sins.
  • After Jesus forgave the man his sins, then He said, “Arise, take up thy bed, and go unto thine house.”
  • Jesus caused the man to flow seamlessly between forgiveness of sins and physical healing.
  • This paralytic man experienced the Bible twins, forgiveness from sins and physical healing.
  • Why is this link between sickness and salvation important to see in the Bible?

Faith Is the Same for Both

  • This is an area of stumble for some.
  • They think they don’t have enough faith to overcome cancer or some other deadly disease.
  • Do you have enough faith to believe you are saved?
  • Do you have enough faith to know Jesus bore your iniquities?
  • If you do, you can believe God for a well body.
  • Why is that?
  • If you can believe for one part of Calvary, you can believe for the other.
  • It’s not any different.
  • You said “Yes” to Jesus for the salvation of your soul and you can say the same “Yes” to Jesus for the salvation of your body.
  • It’s not two kinds of faith.
  • It’s the same faith.
  • The same faith which delivered you from a devil’s hell will also deliver from the diseases which are of the devil.
  • You don’t need any special kind of faith to be healed just use the same faith when you received Jesus for salvation.
    • You heard the gospel message which says, Jesus died for my sins.
    • Then, you acted on that information.
    • You responded to the call to come to Him.
    • You gave your hearts to God.
    • When you did, something happened to you on the inside of you. You were born again.
  • It’s the same thing with healing.
  • You are now hearing the message which says, “Jesus died for your diseases. He bore them at the same place He bore your sins which means you don’t need to bear them.
  • There’s no sense in both of you bearing disease.
  • Jesus already bore it.
  • It makes no more sense for both of you to bear sin.
  • Jesus has already done it for you.
  • Now, you need to act on this information.
  • You need to respond to this call to come to Him for your body.
  • You gave your heart to God.
  • Now, give Him your body.
  • Give Him access to it with your faith.

Call to Action:

Say to the Lord, “Father I see in your Word Jesus took my diseases. He carried my pains. That means if Jesus bore them I don’t have to have them anymore. I don’t need to bear them. I receive my healing right now in the Name of Jesus.
