Moses Asks God for His Name

Exodus 3:13–14 (KJV) 13 And Moses said unto God, Behold, when I come unto the children of Israel, and shall say unto them, The God of your fathers hath sent me unto you; and they shall say to me, What is his name? what shall I say unto them? 14 And God said unto Moses, I AM THAT I AM: and he said, Thus shalt thou say unto the children of Israel, I AM hath sent me unto you.

  • Moses said, ‘God what is your name?’
  • What does that mean?
  • It means God is not His Name.
  • Many think God is His name but it’s not.
  • We call Him God.
  • We refer to him as our mighty God, and He is.
  • We say, He is the God of all Gods, and He is.
  • But, God is not His name.
  • ‘God’ is what He is. It is not who He is.
  • Moses knew it and that’s why he asked God for His ID.
  • “I need to see your driver’s license, God. Surely you have a license for that chariot you drive, Moses said.”
  • Moses said, “When I go and do this mission you are asking me to do and your people say to me, “Who sent you? What do I say? When I say, ‘The God of your fathers has sent me to you, and they shall say to me, what is his name? How do I fill in that blank?’
  • So, God whipped out His ID and showed it to Moses.
  • It did not say GOD on it.
  • It said ‘I am that I am.’
  • So, you can see by this conversation that God is not His name.
  • God answered Moses question with this response. He said to tell them ‘I AM’ has sent you to them.
  • The Lord has several names by which He is called.
  • These names are an integral part of knowing God.
  • You can know God better by knowing His Names.
  • Every one of God’s names reveals a different part or aspect of His Being.
  • In the Old Testament, there are six primary names for God.

Elohim

  • The name Elohim is used twenty-two hundred and forty-seven times in the Old Testament.
  • It is the plural form of God.
  • Why is it plural?
  • It is plural because God is a family of beings including God the Father, God the Son and God the Holy Spirit.
  • The name Elohim emphasizes God’s role as Creator.
  • In the book of Genesis, the book which gives us the creation story, the name Elohim is found thirty-one times alone.
  • The most famous use of Elohim is found in the scripture ‘In the beginning ‘Elohim’ created the heavens and the earth (Genesis 1:1).

Eloah

  • The name Eloah means, God the Divine One and it is used fifty-six times. It is the form of EL which stresses that God alone is deserving of worship.
  • It is this God, our God, the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who alone is deserving of worship.

Habakkuk 3:3 (KJV) 3 God (Eloah) came from Teman, And the Holy One from mount Paran. Selah. His glory covered the heavens, And the earth was full of his praise.

  • You will find the Name Eloah mostly in the book of Job where it appears forty-two times.

Elah

  • The name Elah, another Name for God the Father, appears in seventy-eight passages but only in the book of Ezra and Daniel.
  • Elah means awesome or fearful one. It is tied to the idea of reverence.
  • God, our God, is so awesome that He alone is to be feared and reverenced.

Daniel 3:17–18 (NKJV) 17 If that is the case, our God whom we serve is able to deliver us from the burning fiery furnace, and He will deliver us from your hand, O king. 18 But if not, let it be known to you, O king, that we do not serve your gods, nor will we worship the gold image which you have set up.”

Tsur – Rock or Refuge

  • The word rock, as a name for God, appears seventy times in the Bible.

Isaiah 44:8 (NKJV) 8 Do not fear, nor be afraid; Have I not told you from that time, and declared it? You are My witnesses. Is there a God besides Me? Indeed there is no other Rock; I know not one.’ ”

Yahweh

  • The name Yahweh or Jehovah occurs four hundred and thirty-seven times and it means the Self-Existent or Eternal One.
  • This name was so exceptional in the eyes of the Jewish people that they would not utter this name with their lips.
  • Instead, they would substitute the word ‘Adonai’ which means Lord in its place.
  • There are 11 sub-names tied to Yahweh or Jehovah.
  • Jehovah – Jireh – the Lord our provider
  • Jehovah – Nissi – the Lord our banner
  • Jehovah – Tsidekenuh – the Lord our righteousness
  • Jehovah – Shalom – The Lord our peace
  • Jehovah – Rapha – the Lord our healer
  • Jehovah – Mekaddishkem – the Lord our sanctifier
  • Jehovah – Saboath – the Lord of hosts
  • Jehovah – Shammah – the Lord is present.
  • Jehovah – Elyon – the Lord most high
  • Jehovah – Roni – the Lord our shepherd
  • Jehovah – Hoseennu – the Lord our maker

El

  • El is the sixth name for God and it is found two-hundred twenty-five times in the Old Covenant.
  • It means the Strong One, the Mighty One or the Prominent One.
  • This is the Name which references the great muscle of God, the great power, the huge strength or the off the chart ability, of God.
  • In Psalm 89:13, the psalmist declares of God, “You have a mighty arm.”
  • God has a pair of biceps on him. Do you understand what I’m saying? Power in His arms that will just blow you away.

Numbers 23:22 (KJV) 22 God brought them out of Egypt; He hath as it were the strength of an unicorn.

  • The word El is found in the phrase Almighty God.

Exodus 6:3 (NKJV) 3 I appeared to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob, as God Almighty, but by My name LORD I was not known to them.

  • If you take the word God and add the word Almighty to it you have El-Shaddai.
  • El-Shaddai is the Almighty God or the God that’s too much God.
  • Jesus, the Father’s son, is also tagged with one of the El names in Isaiah’s prophecy.
  • You know, like Father like Son.

Isaiah 9:6 (KJV) 6 For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: And the government shall be upon his shoulder: And his name shall be called Wonderful, Counselor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace.

  • So, in the El names of the Father, we find something out about the name of Jesus.
  • Jesus Name is called Wonderful.
  • The Hebrew word ‘Wonderful’ means of an extraordinary nature making it mysterious or difficult to comprehend.
  • Jesus Name, according to the Hebrew, is of an extraordinary nature.
  • Like the person, the Name is so extraordinarily outstanding until He almost seems too good to be true.
  • But it is true.
  • But He is true. He is that wonderful.
  • All of that wonder, all of that goodness, all of that extraordinary nature is wrapped up in His Name.
  • His name is higher than anything you can name.

Psalm 138:2 (ESV) 2 I bow down toward your holy temple and give thanks to your name for your steadfast love and your faithfulness, for you have exalted above all things your name and your word.

  • The Name is the Person and Jesus is the Word, for in the beginning was the Word and the Word was with God and the Word was God (John 1:1).
  • So, right along with the Word is the Name because they are both the same.
  • Jesus Name is Wonderful.

Counselor

  • Isaiah 9:6 also informs us His Name shall be called Counselor.
  • The Hebrew word for ‘counselor’ means just that.
  • It means someone who gives advice about problems.
  • Notice the connection to the Spirit of God in connection with the Name of Jesus as counselor.

Isaiah 11:2 And the Spirit of the LORD shall rest upon him, the Spirit of wisdom and understanding, the Spirit of counsel and might, the Spirit of knowledge and the fear of the LORD.

  • Counsel is a specific anointing imparted by the Spirit of God.

Isaiah 28:29 29 This also comes from the LORD of hosts; he is wonderful in counsel and excellent in wisdom.

  • Counsel is also tied to the wisdom of God.

Proverbs 8:14 14 I have counsel and sound wisdom; I have insight; I have strength.

  • Counsel, which arises from the wisdom of God is found in the Name.

Colossians 2:3 3 in whom are hidden all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge.

  • And if they are in Jesus the person, they are also in Jesus the Name.
  • So we can say, ‘Lord I need wisdom. I need advice about what to do next and I need it in Jesus Name.
  • And because His Name is Counselor, that wisdom is yours.

Mighty God

  • Further, Isaiah 9:6 says Jesus Name is also known as Mighty God.
  • Mighty God carries the El designation.
  • If you take the word ‘God and add to it the word ‘mighty’, you get the name El-Gibbor.
  • The name El-Gibbor means God the Warrior.
  • The picture of Jesus in Revelation 19 leading the armies of heaven is a picture of the name El-Gibbor.

Revelation 19:11–16 (NKJV) 11 Now I saw heaven opened, and behold, a white horse. And He who sat on him was called Faithful and True, and in righteousness He judges and makes war. 12 His eyes were like a flame of fire, and on His head were many crowns. He had a name written that no one knew except Himself. 13 He was clothed with a robe dipped in blood, and His name is called The Word of God. 14 And the armies in heaven, clothed in fine linen, white and clean, followed Him on white horses. 15 Now out of His mouth goes a sharp sword, that with it He should strike the nations. And He Himself will rule them with a rod of iron. He Himself treads the winepress of the fierceness and wrath of Almighty God. 16 And He has on His robe and on His thigh a name written: KING OF KINGS AND LORD OF LORDS

  • There is something to a name.
  • And so when we see that God the Father has a name and it is so majestic and so revealing and we see Jesus, the Son of God, and how some of His Name bleeds over into the Son, we can then begin to see the greatness of Jesus name in the New Testament.
  • And so let’s look at this in next week’s podcast.
  • Let’s look at why Jesus Name is so powerful?
