#S4-039: How to Use the Name of Jesus to Live A Miracle Life [Podcast]

You Can Use the Name of Jesus to Live A Miracle Life

Did you know that until the year 1100, most people in Europe had only one name? With the population increasing it became difficult to distinguish among people, so surnames (last names) were added. These names came primarily from four different sources: A man’s occupation such as John Cook or John Miller; location such as John Overhill or John Brook; a man’s relationship with his father like John’s son would be Johnson; and lastly personal characteristics like John Small, John Short, John Longfellow, or Peter Widehips. How did Jesus acquire His Name? In these week’s podcast, we are going to look at how Jesus acquired His Name as a man and how you, as a man, can use this divine weapon in your everyday life.

Jesus: A Man Just Like You

Philippians 2:5–11 (ESV)
5 Have this mind among yourselves, which is yours in Christ Jesus, 6 who, though he was in the form of God, did not count equality with God a thing to be grasped, 7 but emptied himself, by taking the form of a servant, being born in the likeness of men. 8 And being found in human form, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross. 9 Therefore God has highly exalted him and bestowed on him the name that is above every name, 10 so that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, 11 and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.

  • This is such an important line in the things of God.
  • You remember Isaiah said, the Word functions like lego blocks, one on top of the other.
  • The Word says it as line upon line and precept upon precept (Isaiah 28:9–10).
  • This line, that Jesus, though He was God yet became a man, is vitally critical to the life of faith.
  • If Jesus did anything, and I mean anything, as the Son of God it would invalidate John 14:12.
  • You wouldn’t be able to do the greater works He commanded us to do because you are not the Son of God like He is.
  • So, the humanity of Jesus is important when looking at the Name.
  • Last week we mentioned that it’s the life which is lived which adds value to a name.
  • Jesus beat the devil as a man.
  • He overcame temptation as a man.
  • He triumphed over persecution as a man.
  • He conquered death as a man.

Hebrews 1:3 (NKJV)
3 who being the brightness of His glory and the express image of His person, and upholding all things by the word of His power, when He had by Himself purged our sins, sat down at the right hand of the Majesty on high,

  • There was a point in Jesus life where He had to go it alone.
  • Where He had to finish His course by Himself.
  • No help.
  • No anointing to aid Him.
  • No power to quicken Him.
  • No Presence to walk with.
  • He said these chilling words at three in the afternoon as He hung naked on a cross, “My God, My God why have you forsaken me (Mk. 15:34).”
  • He had to go it alone from that point.
  • He went to hell as a human spirit and He served your sentence for your sin and mine three days and nights.
  • And, He did it alone.
  • Alone in the regions of the damned.
  • But when the penalty was served and the sentence completed,

Acts 13:30 (NKJV)
30 But God raised Him from the dead.

  • How did God raise Him from the dead?

Romans 8:11 (NKJV)
11 But if the Spirit of Him who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in you, He who raised Christ from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies through His Spirit who dwells in you.

  • In the midst of the darkness and despair which is known as hell, God’s power in the person of the Holy Spirit swept through the regions of the underworld and shook that place to its core.
  • Jesus spirit rose from the place of the dead and His spirit leaped into His body which, during these three days and nights, was stretched out in Joseph of Arimathea’s tomb.
  • When His spirit leaped into His body, at that exact moment, God’s power hit Jesus body and transformed it into a glorified body.
  • When Jesus rose again from the grave and He did it as a man.
  • Here’s what we know.
  • The name is the person.
  • The name is in place of the person.
  • So, if you were facing a demon spirit and Jesus decided to physically manifest right next to you and He physically spoke to the demon while you stood there watching, that would be no different than you talking to the demon yourself in His Name.
  • It’s the exact same thing.
  • Every victory Jesus won is in His Name.
  • You don’t need the physical presence of Jesus because you have the same thing in His Name.
  • So, when God bestowed upon Him the Name that is above every name, that’s a man He gave that Name to.
  • When Jesus handed His Name to you to use as His representative, that was a man to man transaction.

The Name and the Power of Attorney

  • Why did Jesus give you access to His Name?
  • He gave you His name to use in His stead to carry on the work He started.

Acts 1:1 (NKJV)
1 The former account I made, O Theophilus, of all that Jesus began both to do and teach,

  • This hand-off, this go and use my Name in my place is a legal statute on planet earth.
  • It is called the power of attorney.
  • This is another way to look at the Name.
  • Jesus gave you His Name to transact business for the second member of the Godhead.
  • The God who upholds and sustains the universe by the Word of His Power.
  • Let the importance of who you are, the importance of your mission, and the importance of who you represent, sink in on you.
  • Think about why this happened this way.
  • Even with a glorified body, Jesus could only physically be in one place at one time.
  • But with His Name, he has multiplied Himself millions of times over.

The Name Is the Person

  • On planet earth, names serve primarily to distinguish one person from another.
  • But names mean so much more.
  • In Bible times, names had other significant functions.

Psalm 75:1 (NKJV)
1 We give thanks to You, O God, we give thanks! For Your wondrous works declare that Your name is near.

  • How can the Name be near us if it’s just lettering on paper?
  • It’s easy once you recognize the Name stands for the person.
  • We could say it this way.
  • So, if the Name stands for the person then the Name stands for the Presence also.

2 Chronicles 7:16 (NKJV)
16 For now I have chosen and sanctified this house, that My name may be there forever; and My eyes and My heart will be there perpetually.

  • Can you now understand why God gave us this particular commandment?

Exodus 20:7 (NKJV)
7 “You shall not take the name of the LORD your God in vain, for the LORD will not hold him guiltless who takes His name in vain.

  • Since the name is the person, to curse using the name is to curse the person.
  • God’s people are to reverence the Name.

Psalm 86:11 (NKJV)
11 Teach me Your way, O LORD; I will walk in Your truth; Unite my heart to fear Your name.

  • No wonder why, since the Name is the person.
  • They are to praise the Name.

Psalm 97:12 (NKJV)
12 Rejoice in the LORD, you righteous, And give thanks at the remembrance of His holy name.

  • No wonder why, since the Name is the person.
  • They are to trust the Name.

Isaiah 50:10 (NKJV)
10 “Who among you fears the LORD? Who obeys the voice of His Servant? Who walks in darkness And has no light? Let him trust in the name of the LORD And rely upon his God.

  • No wonder why, since the Name is the person.
  • They are to call upon the Name.

Isaiah 12:4 (NKJV)
4 And in that day you will say: “Praise the LORD, call upon His name; Declare His deeds among the peoples, Make mention that His name is exalted. 1

  • No wonder why, since the Name is the person.
  • In fact, they are to do everything in the Name.

Colossians 3:17 (NKJV)
17 And whatever you do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through Him.

  • One more time, no wonder why, since the Name is the person.
  • Now stop a minute and think about these words, ‘Whatever you do in word or deed’ – ‘the Name is the person’.
  • Putting these concepts together reveal the fact that God wants to do everything with you.
  • He wants in on all aspects of your life.
  • The Name is the central core of a believer’s day.
  • Your lifestyle is a lifestyle of the Name.
  • Why? Because your life is Jesus and in the place of Jesus is the Name.
  • The Name stands for the Presence.
  • The Name stands for God.

God, Moses, and the Name

  • What more can we learn about Jesus Name by looking at God’s own Name?
  • Moses was instructed by God to go down to Egypt and present himself to Pharaoh with this message, “Let my people go.”
  • Moses balked at that request.
  • He needed some convincing.
  • Sometimes we need some convincing too.
  • If your life is really secure and really comfortable and you like the place you are in, you are probably missing God.
  • Following God, reading His Word and hearing His voice, will keep your life on a razor’s edge.
  • He will keep you trusting Him.
  • He will keep you depending on Him.
  • He is going to give you assignments that require you to give up your security blanket and come out of your comfort zone.
  • He will not give you assignments that you can do with the comfort of your own abilities.
  • Why does He do this?

1 Corinthians 1:26–29 (TNIV)
26 Brothers and sisters, think of what you were when you were called. Not many of you were wise by human standards; not many were influential; not many were of noble birth. 27 But God chose the foolish things of the world to shame the wise; God chose the weak things of the world to shame the strong. 28 God chose the lowly things of this world and the despised things—and the things that are not—to nullify the things that are, 29 so that no one may boast before him.

  • There is something about the human make-up because of the fall of man that requires a leaning on God so that no one may boast before Him.
  • It’s just the way it is.
  • So if your walk is comfortable, you are probably missing Him.
  • If you are not challenged by His will, you don’t know it yet.
  • God chooses people who are weak and can’t get stuff done to get stuff done.
  • It’s amazing how we drawback in some areas when that is the exact area that God wants to use you in.
  • Someone asks you to get up and give a testimony in front of people and you shrink back because you say I can’t do that; I am no good at that.
  • Congratulations, you are exactly in the place you should be; you are exactly in 1 Corinthians 1:26-29 territory.
  • That’s why you should get up and give it, trusting God on the inside as you step out.
  • Someone asks you to go on a mission’s trip and you say, that’s not my calling.
  • Congratulations, you are exactly in the place you should be; you are exactly in 1 Corinthians 1:26-29 territory and that’s why you should probably go.
  • So here’s Moses.
  • The Lord has approached him and told him that He was to go to Pharaoh.

Exodus 3:10 (NKJV)
10 Come now, therefore, and I will send you to Pharaoh that you may bring My people, the children of Israel, out of Egypt.”

  • How did that conversation go?
  • What was Moses response to God?

Exodus 4:10–12 (TNIV)
10 Moses said to the Lord, “Pardon your servant, Lord. I have never been eloquent, neither in the past nor since you have spoken to your servant. I am slow of speech and tongue.” 11 The Lord said to him, “Who gave human beings their mouths? Who makes them deaf or mute? Who gives them sight or makes them blind? Is it not I, the Lord? 12 Now go; I will help you speak and will teach you what to say.”

  • If God had to teach Moses what to say, if God had to help him speak, that means that means emphatically that Moses did not have the ability to do what God assigned for his life.
  • Moses did not have what it took though he was educated at the highest levels in Egypt.
  • Moses didn’t have what it takes and you don’t either.
  • If your Christian life is a nice neat package, you are missing it somewhere.
  • If your idea of the Christian life is being nice to a few people, going to church, praying a little bit, giving a little bit (not too much just a little bit) and staying in your comfort zone, you have a distorted view of what following Jesus means.
  • Jesus will keep you trusting God.
  • He will keep you praying to Him.
  • He will keep you asking questions and seeking for His wisdom.
  • The Spirit of God will lead you to do things way beyond where you are.
  • Moses finally struck a deal with God.
  • “I’ll go but I need something from you. I need to know your name.”
  • Before you go out and work for God, you should know some things.
  • You should know His Name.

Exodus 3:13–14 (KJV)
13 And Moses said unto God, Behold, when I come unto the children of Israel, and shall say unto them, The God of your fathers hath sent me unto you; and they shall say to me, What is his name? what shall I say unto them? 14 And God said unto Moses, I AM THAT I AM: and he said, Thus shalt thou say unto the children of Israel, I AM hath sent me unto you.

  • Isn’t that an odd request?
  • Moses said, ‘God what is your name?’
  • What does that mean?
  • It means God is not His Name.
  • Many think God is His name but it’s not.
  • We call Him God.
  • We refer to him as our mighty God, and He is.
  • We say, He is the God of all Gods, and He is.
  • But, God is not His name.
  • ‘God’ is what He is. It is not who He is.
  • Moses knew it and that’s why he asked God for His id.
  • “I need to see your driver’s license, God. Surely you have a license for that chariot you drive, Moses said.”
  • Moses said, “When I go and do this mission you are asking me to do and your people say to me, “Who sent you? What do I say? When I say, ‘The God of your fathers has sent me to you, and they shall say to me, what is his name? How do I fill in that blank?’
  • So, God whipped out His ID and showed it to Moses.
  • It did not say GOD on it.
  • It said ‘I am that I am.’
  • So, you can see from this conversation that God is not His name.
  • God answered Moses question with this response. He said to tell them ‘I AM’ has sent you to them.
  • The Lord has several names by which He is called.
  • These names are an integral part of knowing God.
  • You can know God better by knowing His Names.
  • Every one of God’s names reveals a different part or aspect of His Being.
  • In the Old Testament, there are six primary names for God.
