In 1 Corinthians 12:1, the Lord speaks of things pertaining to the Holy Spirit. Paul’s teaching is in reference to the fact that the Corinthians were apparently prophesying and pronouncing a curse upon Jesus. They were messing up the simple gift of prophecy. So Paul straightens them out by saying, Hey wait a minute, no one speaking by God’s Ho;y Spirit will ever defame Jesus. Believers of that generation needed to be admonished, taught and corrected when it came to working with this member of the Godhead. The situation is no different today. So, in today’s post, let us look at some ways that the Spirit of God moves.
[Tweet “With experience, you will begin to be able to discern the thoughts of the Spirit in your heart.”]
1 Corinthians 12:1 (AV) 1 Now concerning spiritual gifts, brethren, I would not have you ignorant.
How God Moves Within
- Notice in the following verses how the Spirit is declared to be in the believer.
John 4:14 (AV) 14 But whosoever drinketh of the water that I shall give him shall never thirst; but the water that I shall give him shall be in him a well of water springing up into everlasting life.
- In this passage, the Spirit of God within is described as a well of water springing up.
- Many times that’s exactly how it seems when He speaks up in you.
- His words well up or pop up in you.
- It is very distinct and often sudden.
- His Word, His counsel, His wisdom just springs up from within.
- At other times, His thoughts will ‘float up’ inside of you.
- This is less distinct and it almost seems like it’s your thoughts.
- With experience, you will begin to be able to separate His thoughts from yours.
- In all of these cases, the best way to hone is to trust Him.
- Ask the Lord for help.
- Pray that your thoughts are His thoughts.
Spirit Within Scriptures
John 14:16–17 (KJV) 16 And I will pray the Father, and he shall give you another Comforter, that he may abide with you for ever; 17 Even the Spirit of truth; whom the world cannot receive, because it seeth him not, neither knoweth him: but ye know him; for he dwelleth with you, and shall be in you. …shall be in you
Galatians 4:6 (KJV) 6 And because ye are sons, God hath sent forth the Spirit of his Son into your hearts, crying, Abba, Father.
- God sent forth the Spirit of his Son into your hearts…
1 John 2:27 (ESV) 27 But the anointing that you received from him abides in you, and you have no need that anyone should teach you. But as his anointing teaches you about everything, and is true, and is no lie—just as it has taught you, abide in him.
- ….the anointing abideth (remain, sojourn, tarry) in you…
1 John 4:4 (ESV) 4 Little children, you are from God and have overcome them, for he who is in you is greater than he who is in the world.
- …greater is He that is in you…
1 Corinthians 6:19 (KJV) 19 What? know ye not that your body is the temple of the Holy Ghost which is in you, which ye have of God, and ye are not your own?…your body is the temple of the Holy Ghost which is in you
- God, by the Holy Spirit, possesses you, He possesses your spirit.
- Because He does, you are never alone
- So, now we have the Holy Ghost in us, what is He doing in us?
- Are you conscious of Him who is within?
- It’s sad to say that in some believers, he is unable to do much.
How the Spirit Within Helped Us
- We have previously done several podcasts on how the Spirit of God got Sharon and me through a brain aneurysm she experienced in December of 2001.
- We had a great many ‘it just so happened moments’, too numerous to be considered coincidence.
- The Spirit of God was right there helping us.
- Here is an excerpt from the podcast notes.
It Just so Happened
- At approximately 11:05 PM on Christmas Eve while at work, my wife suffered a brain aneurysm.
It just so happened…
- That the blood vessel leaked inside of Sharon’s head instead of gushed.
- That when Sharon called to the house for help, one child, Jessica, was up.
- If she hadn’t been up, my chance of hearing our light ringing phone was greatly diminished.
- It just so happened that Jessica was able to wake me up.
- No small feat that late at night.
- It just so happened that Sharon phrased her words the right way to get me out of bed on a cold winters night
- It just so happened that Sharon had enough strength to unlock the back door to her patient’s house.
- It just so happened that for once Sharon allowed herself to be taken to the hospital rather than take 2 Tylenol and push past the problem.
- She’s famous within the family of saying ‘I’m okay’ when she really isn’t.
- The statistics show that 25% of all aneurysm patients die before they get to the hospital.
- It just so happened that we got her to the hospital on time.
- Another 25% of all aneurysm patients die on the way to the hospital.
- It just so happened that the ER doctor did not misdiagnose her condition as a migraine.
- He ordered a cat scan.
- It just so happened that Sharon’s personal physician also had an aneurysm in her neck and she had researched diligently the best doctor for her own procedure – this doctor became Sharon’s doctor by recommendation.
- The Spirit of God had this timely information available.
- It just so happened that this neurosurgeon performed a procedure on Sharon’s head on Christmas day ‘just in time’ to decrease the swelling ( I was told that another person had to have part of her brain removed to make room in her head for her swollen brain).
- It just so happened that Sharon did not have a stroke on Christmas day because of the swelling and brain pressure she had.
- It just so happened that my brother did the right thing when I called him to tell him what happened to Sharon.
- He steadied me with prayer when I was emotionally open.
- It just so happened that Sharon increased in strength considerably after only one day in the hospital.
- It just so happened that Sharon came through her 4-hour brain surgery with flying colors.
- The recovery nurse said that she was trying to sit up while in recovery
- It just so happened the next morning she called me on the phone and had an intelligent conversation with me.
- It just so happened that the Lord gave me a verse of scripture as I was driving:
- Psalm 34:19 is the verse that floated up within and gave me faith that Sharon would recover.
- It just so happened that I happened to be there when she had her first brain spasm – one week after her surgery – the radiology doctor told us to cross our fingers
- The Neurosurgeon said, he thought Sharon might avoid these spasms because of how well she was doing.
- It just happened that we have something better than crossing your fingers.
- Sharon had three brain spasms and though each of them was potentially lethal, she lived.
- There’s much more to this story.
- Especially check out the Podcast entitled ‘The Man with the Light‘ for more workings of the Spirit of God.
- It was His revelation given at a stop light that saved Sharon’s life.
- If God did that for me, He will do it for you.
