How to Develop a Highly Effective Confidence in God

What A Highly Effective Confidence in God Looks Like

The word confidence is mentioned forty-eight times in the Bible and is closely connected to trust. The question must be asked then, “Who is your confidence in?” Who do you trust? Who do you lean on in your everyday life? Proverbs 3:26 states that our confidence should be in the Lord. What does it take to develop highly effective confidence in God?

What Confidence in God Means

1 John 2:28 (KJV)
28 And now, little children, abide in him; that, when he shall appear, we may have confidence, and not be ashamed before him at his coming.

  • If you look at this verse, you will see that confidence is spiritual.
  • It comes from abiding in Him.
  • The Greek word ‘confidence has in it the idea of being free and fearless confidence, cheerful courage, boldness, and assurance1
  • Confidence in God means a belief that you are able and capable of doing whatever His will is.
  • Confidence denotes trust in something or someone.
  • It involves a high degree of certainty and faith.
  • Faith only comes one way.

Romans 10:17 (KJV)17 So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.

  • We can have confidence in God and our standing with him.
  • A confident person is a person that is or has the following:
    • Free
    • Courage
    • Boldness
    • Expectant
    • Conviction
    • Trust and faith

What is the Opposite of Confidence in God?

  •  A person who lacks confidence in God can exhibit these traits.
    • inferiority
    • intimidated
    • paralysis
    • fearful
    • timidity
    • insecurity

A Confident Person Thinks that He Can Accomplish

  • You remember the story about the little engine that could.
    • As the story goes, there is an engine that is hauling toys and presents and needs to get over a mountain hilltop, but it breaks down.
    • The toys need help, they’ve got to get over the mountain top.
    • The toys cry to three different trains that go by all of which have various excuses why they can’t take the toys over the mountain.
    • Finally, a little blue engine comes by and is finally convinced that he can take the load over the mountaintop.
    • He starts up the mountain saying, “I think I can, I think I can, I think I can.
  • And, you know he makes it over the mountain.
  • Do you know why, because he thinks that he can?
  • On the way down the other side of the mountain, the little blue engine says, “I thought I could, I thought I could….”
  • Developing confidence in tomorrow means getting up in the morning and saying, “You know I’ve never faced what I’m going to face today… but I think I can.”
  • People who have confidence in God have a ‘can do’ attitude.
  • The book of Philippians describes this attitude.

Philippians 4:13 (KJV) 13 I can do all things through Christ which strengtheneth me.

  • Look at it also in the Amplified translation.

Philippians 4:13 (AMP)
13 I have strength for all things in Christ Who empowers me [I am ready for anything and equal to anything through Him Who infuses inner strength into me; I am self-sufficient in Christ’s sufficiency].

What Confidence in God Has Nothing to Do With

  • Confidence in God has nothing to do with
    • Bank account size
    • Popularity
    • Beauty
  • People think that if they have these things, it will build confidence.
  • Many rich, many famous, and many beautiful people commit suicide all the time.
  • Do remember the tragic story of Joan Rivers husband Edgar who committed suicide in a Philadelphia hotel room.
  • All the success words you could think of described this man.
  • He was wealthy, successful, and had a beautiful wife and daughter.
  • Hopelessness is the opposite of confidence.
  • There are many hope-less people on planet earth.
  • People that don’t think that they can.
  • People that have no confidence in tomorrow.

Develop Confidence in Your Tomorrow

  • Confidence in God makes us:
    • lively
    • joyful
    • bouncy
    • glad to be alive on planet earth
  • You don’t have to be depressed.
  • There are Christians that are so depressed that they can’t wait to go to heaven just so that they can get out of the mess that they are in here on planet earth.
  • You don’t want to go to your grave a grippy, tired, frustrated old person.
  • Moses went home to be with the Lord at 120 years with perfect vision and full body function.
  • He was full of life.
  • Caleb, at the young age of 85, went to war and conquered a great enemy.
  • How did these men develop such high confidence in God?
  • They did it by knowing several things.

Confidence in God Means Knowing that He Is Good

  • You can’t blame God.
  • You must know that He is a good God.
  • Sounds simplistic but there are people who blame God for the bad things in life.
  • They think that God is against them or that God is trying to hurt them.
  • God is never your problem.
  • He is always your answer.
  • People blame God for the death of loved ones.
  • Martha tried this at the tomb of Lazarus.

John 11:21 (KJV) — 21 Then said Martha unto Jesus, Lord, if thou hadst been here, my brother had not died.

  • People blame God for sickness.
  • They accuse of Him of answered prayers and lost opportunities.
  • God is not the author of bad things.
  • It’s hard for you to have confidence in God if you think that when you wake up in the morning that the Almighty is against you.
  • The truth is God is trying to get good things to come your way and to keep bad stuff from happening to you.
  • To have substantial confidence in God, you must get the job descriptions straight.
  • Good things come from God, and bad things come from the devil.

James 1:17 (NLT) 17 Whatever is good and perfect comes to us from God…

  • If it’s not good, it’s not God.
  • Confidence comes from knowing that God loves you, that God accepts you, and that God approves of you.
