At the close of World War II General Douglas MacArthur said: “We have had our last chance. If we do not now devise some greater and more equitable system, Armageddon will be at our door. The problem basically is theological and involves a spiritual recrudescence and improvement of human character… It must be of the spirit if we are to save the flesh.”1 We get over into talking about Armaggedon when we talk about the ‘bowl’ judgments in Revelation because it is the last bowl judgment of the Tribulation. So, “Who Makes It Out the Tribulation?” – All this and more on this week’s Light on Life.

Podcast Notes
Tribulation Judgments: The Seven Bowls
Revelation 16:1–2 (ESV) — 1 Then I heard a loud voice from the temple telling the seven angels, “Go and pour out on the earth the seven bowls of the wrath of God.”
- So now, this is the third set of seven judgments.
- That’s important to understand because this third set is now raining down on a planet already saturated with the agony and misery of the first fourteen judgments.
- Mentally and physically these judgments press down on the willful, relentless stubbornness of man.
- Fourteen head smashing in your face punishments and STILL men refuse to change their ways and acknowledge God.
- That’s one reason why there has to be a hell.
- And so another round of seven begins.
- Here’s the first bowl judgment.
The First Bowl
Revelation 16:2 (ESV) — 2 So the first angel went and poured out his bowl on the earth, and harmful and painful sores came upon the people who bore the mark of the beast and worshiped its image.
- The first Bowl Judgment is harmful and painful sores.
- The Greek word ‘harmful’ means bad or wicked.
- You could throw the word virulent in here.
- Virulent means marked by a rapid, severe, and destructive course, as in a virulent sore. 2
- You could throw the word virulent in here.
- The word ‘painful’ means harmful to living things.
- It means being injurious, evil, injurious, dangerous, or pernicious.3
- The word pernicious means tending to destroy, kill, or injure; destructive, ruinous; (rapidly) fatal.
- These sores, or ulcers or abscesses, are rapid, severe and destructively dangerous and injurious.
- That’s judgment fifteen or bowl number one.
The Second Bowl
Revelation 16:3 (ESV) — 3 The second angel poured out his bowl into the sea, and it became like the blood of a corpse, and every living thing died that was in the sea.
- This is the second judgment which affected the sea.
- The first time was the second trumpet, you remember the fiery mountain that hit the seas killing one-third of the wildlife.
- This bowl judgment takes out the other two-thirds of the wildlife.
- Every living thing dies.
- Can you imagine it?
- I don’t think you can.
- Every living thing in the waters of the seas, in the oceans of the world, is smoked dead.
- Fish, which man so depends upon for sustenance, is no more.
- Can you fathom a world without its oceans teaming with salmon, tuna, swordfish, crabs, shrimp and on and on?
The Third Bowl
- The barrenness of death hangs thick in the air as the third bowl judgment is poured out.
- You remember that prior to the Tribulation, the Grace of God is what was pouring out.
- Blessings poured out.
- Healing and wholeness came from the Throne.
- The mercy of God poured out like a desert river flowing under the sands.
- Grace, mercy, favor, health, wholeness, the Baptism of the Spirit, the knowledge and wisdom, the great plan of salvation, and something to live for, the very Kingdom of God, all available, all free.
- Thank God for Jesus.
- But now in the Tribulation period, something else is pouring out: judgment.
- And that’s what these judgments are about.
- God in His mercy is still trying to get men to repent, to acknowledge to tap into the plan of salvation.
- And so comes this third bowl.
Revelation 16:4–7 (ESV) — 4 The third angel poured out his bowl into the rivers and the springs of water, and they became blood. 5 And I heard the angel in charge of the waters say, “Just are you, O Holy One, who is and who was, for you brought these judgments. 6 For they have shed the blood of saints and prophets, and you have given them blood to drink. It is what they deserve!” 7 And I heard the altar saying, “Yes, Lord God the Almighty, true and just are your judgments!”
- The third bowl hits the remaining fresh water supply and they become ‘Red Sea’ blood.
- Remaining because bitter Wormwood has already left its mark via Trumpet judgment three.
- So, these last two bowls destroy all of the water on planet earth, fresh and salt, all polluted with blood.
- You know I’m drinking bottled water here as I’m typing out these words.
- I’m looking at the bottle and I’m looking at these verses and saying WOW, no water, no water.
- I don’t know about you, but I’m living for Jesus.
- and now, the fourth bowl.
The Fourth Bowl
Revelation 16:8–9 (ESV) — 8 The fourth angel poured out his bowl on the sun, and it was allowed to scorch people with fire. 9 They were scorched by the fierce heat, and they cursed the name of God who had power over these plagues. They did not repent and give him glory.
- The fourth bowl ‘thermostats’ up the heat, God justs dials it up to ‘scorching level’.
- Molten heat pours out from the sun.
- The word ‘scorch’ means to burn up, to dry up.
- Remember there is no water now, it’s all contaminated with blood.
- This is a prelude to hell, excessive heat and no water.
- You remember the rich man who lifted his eyes in hell?
Luke 16:24 (ESV) — 24 And he called out, ‘Father Abraham, have mercy on me, and send Lazarus to dip the end of his finger in water and cool my tongue, for I am in anguish in this flame.’
- All the rich man wanted was one drop of water to cool his tongue.
- He was in anguish because of the flame.
- The Greek word ‘anguish’ gives us a picture both of the rich man in hell and the living inhabitants of the earth during this portion of the Tribulation.
- The word means to undergo physical torment, suffer pain4
- It means to be in agony.
- The Lord, in His mercy, is giving these people a snapshot, just a taste of what’s to come, if they don’t change their mind about Jesus.
- What’s to come is not just for a few weeks or months, but every single day of eternity.
- Anguish, agony, misery, and pain every day, every day, every day.
- The Lord is asking the rebellious of planet earth this question with these last three bowls.
- “Is this what you want your existence to be every day of your life forever?”
- While they are thinking about that there comes the fifth bowl of judgment.
- I’m still talking about corpses and vultures.
The Fifth Bowl
Revelation 16:10 (ESV) — 10 The fifth angel poured out his bowl on the throne of the beast, and its kingdom was plunged into darkness. People gnawed their tongues in anguish
- The fifth bowl surgically strikes the throne of the Beast and his kingdom.
- The Beast is also known as the false prophet.
- He is the religious arm of the Antichrist.
- This Beast and all who align with him, all the geographical countries who covenant with the Beast are nuked with darkness.
- Darkness as heavy and thick as a swamp.
- Again, this is another layer of the lake of Fire.
- The only light in hell are the fiery flames that flicker against the walls.
The Sixth Bowl
Revelation 16:12–16 (ESV) — 12 The sixth angel poured out his bowl on the great river Euphrates, and its water was dried up, to prepare the way for the kings from the east. 13 And I saw, coming out of the mouth of the dragon and out of the mouth of the beast and out of the mouth of the false prophet, three unclean spirits like frogs. 14 For they are demonic spirits, performing signs, who go abroad to the kings of the whole world, to assemble them for battle on the great day of God the Almighty. 15 (“Behold, I am coming like a thief! Blessed is the one who stays awake, keeping his garments on, that he may not go about naked and be seen exposed!”) 16 And they assembled them at the place that in Hebrew is called Armageddon.
- The sixth bowl is the alignment of events that make Armageddon possible.
- The great river the Euphrates dries up.
- Demon spirits trying to preserve their own time on planet earth, looking out for their own skin, knowing what’s coming, go out into the world and whisper in their ears of world leaders, influencing them to gather their armies and fight against Israel.
- Armageddon is the greatest war that planet earth will ever see, greater than World War I and II put together.
- This is the singular event that draws Jesus back to planet earth.
- And now the last bowl, bowl number seven.
The Seventh Bowl
Revelation 16:17–20 (ESV) — 17 The seventh angel poured out his bowl into the air, and a loud voice came out of the temple, from the throne, saying, “It is done!” 18 And there were flashes of lightning, rumblings, peals of thunder, and a great earthquake such as there had never been since man was on the earth, so great was that earthquake. 19 The great city was split into three parts, and the cities of the nations fell, and God remembered Babylon the great, to make her drain the cup of the wine of the fury of his wrath. 20 And every island fled away, and no mountains were to be found.
- This is the last, the grand finale, a humdinger of a judgment.
- This one is as bad as it gets.
- An angel declares, ‘It is done.’
- And it is done.
- Bowl number seven is THE GREATEST EARTHQUAKE THE WORLD HAS EVER SEEN.
- Far greater than the earthquake which rocked the world when seal number six was released.
- I put this in big bold capital letters in the show notes.
- The great city of Babylon is split into three piles of rubble.
- The cities that men run to for refuge thinking there is strength in unity fall.
- Every island and every mountain is affected by the ‘greatest earthquake the world has ever seen.
- And now, the stage is set for one final battle, the battle of Armageddon.
