Your Powerful Victory Over Satan the Liar [Podcast]

Podcast: Light on Life Season Seven Episode Thirty-Five

our Powerful Victory Over Satan the Liar [Podcast]

It’s crucial to expose Satan as the Liar he is. D.L. Moody wrote the following about lying and liars. He said, ‘You cannot offer a man a greater insult than to tell him he is a liar. Unbelief is telling God He is a liar. Suppose a man said, “Mr. Moody, I have no faith in you whatever.” Don’t you think it would grieve me? There is not anything that would wound a man much more than to be told that you do not have any faith in him.

A great many men say, “Oh, I have profound reverence and respect for God.” Yes, profound respect, but not faith. Why it is a downright insult! Suppose a man says, “Mr. Moody, I have profound respect for you, profound admiration for you, but I do not believe a word you say.” I wouldn’t give much for his respect or admiration; I wouldn’t give much for his friendship. God wants us to put our faith in Him. How it would wound a mother’s feelings to hear her children say, “I do love mamma so much, but I don’t believe what she says,” How it would grieve that mother.

And that is about the way a great many of God’s professed children talk. Some men seem to think it is a great misfortune that they do not have faith. Bear in mind it is not a misfortune, but it is the damning sin of the world.1 Your Powerful Victory Over Satan the Liar, that’s our focus on this week’s Light on Life.

Accept the Challenge

Each week’s Podcast contains a call to action. The Word of God will not produce in your life unless you put it into operation.
This weeks call is:

The Word of God teaches us in Luke 10:19 that we have authority over Satan the Liar. That’s good news. It’s good news because there is no work of the enemy that Jesus is Lord over. But, the authority Jesus died to purchase is useless unless you use it in real-life situations.

Join the Conversation

Each week’s Podcast also contains a question designed to encourage testimony. Testimony is vital to a believer’s life. We overcome by it (Rev. 12:11).
This week’s question is:

Question: Spiritual life is all about adjustments. Which ones do you need to make to take your place as God’s ‘dominion’ representative on the earth over Satan, the Liar?

Podcast Notes

Scriptural Titles for Satan

  • Let’s take another look at our main text.

Revelation 12:7–10 (ESV) — 7 Now war arose in heaven, Michael and his angels fighting against the dragon. And the dragon and his angels fought back, 8 but he was defeated, and there was no longer any place for them in heaven. 9 And the great dragon was thrown down, that ancient serpent, who is called the devil and Satan, the deceiver of the whole world—he was thrown down to the earth, and his angels were thrown down with him. 10 And I heard a loud voice in heaven, saying, “Now the salvation and the power and the kingdom of our God and the authority of his Christ have come, for the accuser of our brothers has been thrown down, who accuses them day and night before our God.

  • This passage is one of several vital passages which exposes the arch-enemy of the saints.
  • In it, we have six descriptors for the enemy: he is called the great dragon, the ancient serpent, the devil, Satan, the deceiver, and the accuser.
  • In four previous podcasts, Your Powerful Victory Over Satan the Dragon, Your Powerful Victory Over Satan the Serpent, and Your Powerful Victory Over Satan the Devil – Parts 1 and 2, we looked into the Word of God to expose the works of the greatest opponent to the Lord and mankind.
  • This week, we continue that focus for the Word of the Lord has come saying: ‘Study Satan and expose him.’
  • So, this week, we take a look at Satan the Liar.

Satan the Liar: Author and Chief

John 8:44 (ESV) — 44 You are of your father the devil, and your will is to do your father’s desires. He was a murderer from the beginning, and does not stand in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he lies, he speaks out of his own character, for he is a liar and the father of lies.

  • Everything connected with Satan and the realm of darkness is flooded with lies.
  • And I mean flooded — like Noah and the Ark kind of flood.
  • I mean, the whole world system doesn’t have one nostril above the waterline when it comes to truth-telling.
  • Listen to the Word of God here; Satan, the Liar, does not stand in the truth because, to stand in truth, you must have truth in you, to begin with.
  • Therefore, anything that ties back to Satan is a lie from the start.
  • With that thought, here’s the illustration of the day.
  • Our home has many tree-like shrubs.
  • It took quite a bit of effort for Sharon and me to clean up the ‘overgrown’ property when we first moved into our new place some years ago.
  • Unknown to us, one of our tree-shrubs had a monster vine, all entangled in it.
  • I mean ‘monster’ not because of how big it was but because of how many branches it had wrapped itself around as it weaved throughout the tree.
  • The vine and the tree were one – hardly indistinguishable from each other.
  • That’s what lying is in today’s culture — just like that vine — it weaves throughout the world system so tightly that lies become truth believed and acted on.
  • And with that thought, here’s the quote of the day.
  • This is a horrendously negative quote, but it represents a cultural mindset in place in our society.

“Repeat a lie often enough and it becomes the truth.”2

  • This quote is known as the Law of Propaganda, and it was with horrific results by the Satanic led Nazis.
  • Just know that the Law of Propaganda is alive and well on planet earth.
  • It is Satan’s the Liar’s law — propaganda, brainwashing, and disinformation is his MO.

The Real Battlefield

  • In the movie Patton, George C. Scott, who plays the part of the famous WWII General, instructs his driver to turn right as he rides in a jeep through the African country of Tunisia.
  • His driver argues with Patton insisting that the way to go is not to ‘turn right’ but to proceed straight ahead.
  • Patton demands the driver turn right, and he does so with this quote.

Turn right… I can smell a battlefield.3

  • By the time we finish this podcast, you should be able to smell the battlefield.

2 Corinthians 11:3 (ESV) — 3 But I am afraid that as the serpent deceived Eve by his cunning, your thoughts will be led astray from a sincere and pure devotion to Christ.

  • What is the battlefield?
  • The battlefield is your thinking, your thoughts.
  • The Greek word for ‘thoughts’ means the content of what a person is thinking about.
  • It designates the result of thinking.4
  • The word is found six times in Paul’s letters, five of them here in Second Corinthians.
  • Here are some of the other instances.

2 Corinthians 2:11 (ESV) — so that we would not be outwitted by Satan; for we are not ignorant of his designs.

  • The word ‘designs’ here in 2:11 is this same word ‘thoughts’: we are not ignorant of his thoughts — we could translate this as ‘we are not ignorant of Satan the liar’s mind games.’
  • Smell the battlefield.

2 Corinthians 3:14 (ESV) — But their minds were hardened. For to this day, when they read the old covenant, that same veil remains unlifted, because only through Christ is it taken away.

  • This verse speaks of the Jews who rejected Jesus, who laid aside His gospel — the commentary is this ‘their minds were hardened.’
  • Their minds, not their brains — these rejectors of Jesus had hardened minds – the arteries of their mind were clogged.
  • Clogged thinking — smell the battlefield.

2 Corinthians 4:4 (ESV) — In their case the god of this world has blinded the minds of the unbelievers, to keep them from seeing the light of the gospel of the glory of Christ, who is the image of God.

  • The minds of unbelievers are not just hardened and clogged, but they are blinded.
  • The light of the glorious gospel of Jesus Christ won’t penetrate because they are blind.
  • Their thinking pattern is closed down — the eyes of their mind don’t see the truth of God’s Word.
  • Smell the battlefield.

2 Corinthians 10:5 (ESV) — We destroy arguments and every lofty opinion raised against the knowledge of God, and take every thought captive to obey Christ,

Philippians 4:7 (ESV) — And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.

  • The peace of God builds a garrison around your mind — that’s what the word ‘guard’ means here.
  • God’s peace protects your thinking pattern.
  • That is why it is imperative that you reject fear.
  • ‘Fear not’ is not a Sunday School suggestion — it is a ‘God commandment.’
  • Fearlessness protects the result of your thinking.
  • Smell the battlefield.
  • The truth — the real truth — the Jesus truth — the truth of God the Father — heaven’s truth is the absolute deterrent to the big lie.
  • Going back to the ‘vine’ story, one day, a friend of ours pointed the offender, and we promptly cut it down.

To Combat Satan the Liar: Live Exposed to the Truth

  • So, you think Bible reading is a waste of time? — think again.
  • Followers of Jesus can only thrive spiritually on a steady diet of God’s thinking.
  • If you fast this area, if all the input you have is the nightly news, if you feed on is the world’s commentary on life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness, you are headed for big-time trouble.
  • Expose yourself to God’s thoughts.
  • How else are you going to protect your thinking?

John 3:19–21 (ESV) — 19 And this is the judgment: the light has come into the world, and people loved the darkness rather than the light because their works were evil. 20 For everyone who does wicked things hates the light and does not come to the light, lest his works should be exposed. 21 But whoever does what is true comes to the light, so that it may be clearly seen that his works have been carried out in God.”

  • The truth, the light of God’s Word exposes, that’s the workings of the Word of the Lord.
  • That’s Psalm 119:130 living large in your life.
  • So, God’s Word as the foundation of your thought life is the ticket to success.
  • So, here’s a thought for you: are you willing to live exposed?
  • What do I mean by that? – And, with that thought, here’s the definition of the day.
  • The Greek word ‘exposed’ means to scrutinize or examine carefully, bring to light, expose, set forth5
  • So again, the question is, are you willing to live an exposed life — that is exposed to the Word, scrutinized by God’s written will, examined by the Bible?
  • Living exposed to God’s Word is another way of saying ‘Jesus is Lord’ — for if the Word is not the final authority in your life, then what’s left — the wisdom of this world?
  • Look now at this same ‘living exposed by coming to the light of God’ theme in Hebrews 4:12.

Hebrews 4:12 (ESV) — 12 For the word of God is living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing to the division of soul and of spirit, of joints and of marrow, and discerning the thoughts and intentions of the heart.

  • The Word of God is discerning.
  • What does that mean ‘discerning?’
  • The Greek for ‘discerning’ means to be critical, characterized by careful evaluation and judgment (of someone or something).
  • The Word of God evaluates and judges the thoughts and intentions of the heart.
  • So, coming to God’s Word is essential to combat Satan, the Liars, thinking.
  • Again, remember that lying is one of the foundational cornerstones of the world system.

Origins: Lying and Lies in the Garden of Eden

Psalm 12:1–4 (ESV) — 1 Save, O LORD, for the godly one is gone; for the faithful have vanished from among the children of man. 2 Everyone utters lies to his neighbor; with flattering lips and a double heart they speak. 3 May the LORD cut off all flattering lips, the tongue that makes great boasts, 4 those who say, “With our tongue we will prevail, our lips are with us; who is master over us?”

  • The setting of this Psalm is unknown.
  • What we do know is that at some point in David’s lifespan, a generation of liars arose.
  • Everyone utters lies, David said.
  • Now, this is not entirely valid today — the reason? — because there is a new race of men on the planet – a race of truth-tellers – they are born again children of God.
  • Lying and deceit are not found on their lips.
  • This wasn’t true in David’s – everywhere he turned, there were falsehood and deceit.
  • It got so bad until David cried out to God to save him.
  • Now while this isn’t true of believers in Jesus, it is true of the other race of men on planet earth.
  • I mean, take the media, for example — what is false news?
  • Call it what it is — it’s journalists who are lying.
  • Lying first made an appearance in the Garden of Eden.
  • So then ‘fake news’ is not ‘new news.’
  • Lying is not the new normal — it has always been.
  • Eve believed Satan the Liar.

Genesis 3:1–4 (ESV) — 1 Now the serpent was more crafty than any other beast of the field that the LORD God had made. He said to the woman, “Did God actually say, ‘You shall not eat of any tree in the garden’?” 2 And the woman said to the serpent, “We may eat of the fruit of the trees in the garden, 3 but God said, ‘You shall not eat of the fruit of the tree that is in the midst of the garden, neither shall you touch it, lest you die.’” 4 But the serpent said to the woman, “You will not surely die.

  • There’s the lie – ‘You shall not surely die.’
  • It was a bold-faced flat out humongous lie.
  • And, Eve believed it – she chose to believe the lie instead of the truth of God’s Word.
  • The Lord told her if you eat of the tree, you will surely die — Satan, the Liar told her she wouldn’t die, and you know what happened?
  • Eve died, first spiritually, when she partook of the fruit of the tree, second physically many hundreds of years later.
  • The lie blew up planet earth.
  • Lying is one of the predominant traits of the sin nature.
  • That nature passes via the seed of man.
  • You see this ‘sin nature’ hand-off in Adam and Eve’s children.

Genesis 4:9 (ESV) — 9 Then the LORD said to Cain, “Where is Abel your brother?” He said, “I do not know; am I my brother’s keeper?”

  • Cain, one day, rose up and killed his brother Abel.
  • Now get this, the Lord asked Cain, “Where is Abel, your brother?”
  • Why did He ask him that, isn’t the Most High God Omniscient?
  • Doesn’t He have all knowledge?
  • Don’t you think He already knew what Cain did to Abel?
  • Of course, He did.
  • But, the Lord was giving Cain an opportunity to confess, to come clean.
  • What did Cain do?
  • Did he humble himself and ask for mercy?
  • No, he lied straight to God’s face.
  • He told the Lord, ‘I do not know where my brother is.’
  • Where did he learn to lie like that?
  • There was no one on the planet except Mom and Dad and his brother.
  • I remember one of my children, and I had four of them, at the ripe old age of two, told a lie just as straight-faced and slick as you could tell it.
  • You would be understating it if you said, I was amazed.
  • I couldn’t believe it.
  • Where did she learn how to do that? Her Mom and Dad didn’t teach her that?
  • They got it from the sin nature.
  • Our role as parents is to teach our children not to yield to the sin nature.
  • We have to teach our kids not to lie.
  • That’s part of what Proverbs 22:6 means when it says — ‘Train up a child in the way he should go; even when he is old he will not depart from it.’
  • Here’s another verse similar we just read from Psalm 12.

Psalm 58:3 (ESV) — 3 The wicked are estranged from the womb; they go astray from birth, speaking lies.

Reasons Why People Imitate Satan the Liar

  • One writer on the INTERNET gave nine reasons why people lie.6
  • The top reason? — to avoid something, specifically punishment.
  • Avoiding punishment IS the top reason why people lie.
  • This avoidance is rooted in fear.
  • This may have been Cain’s reason for lying straight in God’s face when He asked him the question, ‘where is your brother?’
  • But drill down a bit into this most common reason why people lie.
  • What is lying to avoid punishment all about anyway?
  • Of course, it’s to get away with whatever.
  • Saying this in Biblical terms, avoiding punishment is an attempt to sidestep the Law of Sowing and Reaping.
  • Now, you may not even know that such a law exists in the universe, but at least you’ve heard the expression, ‘you reap what you sow.’
  • That expression comes from Galatians chapter six.

Galatians 6:7–10 (ESV) — 7 Do not be deceived: God is not mocked, for whatever one sows, that will he also reap. 8 For the one who sows to his own flesh will from the flesh reap corruption, but the one who sows to the Spirit will from the Spirit reap eternal life. 9 And let us not grow weary of doing good, for in due season we will reap, if we do not give up. 10 So then, as we have opportunity, let us do good to everyone, and especially to those who are of the household of faith.

  • Sowing and reaping is a Bible reality: the law works for sinner or saint.
  • Whatever you put in the ground produces.
  • Way back in one of the oldest of Old Testament books, the book of Job, you find this principle.

Job 4:8 (ESV) — 8 As I have seen, those who plow iniquity and sow trouble reap the same.

  • So, even back in super ancient times, sowing and reaping was a recognized reality.
  • Sowing and reaping are farming terms.
  • You can understand why this law is illustrated this way; the Lord spoke ‘agriculture’ — how’s that for a language? — He talked to an agricultural society using terms they lived their lives around.
  • So, here’s the principle — if you sow seeds of trouble, you reap a harvest of the same, that’s the law.
  • Like produces like, that’s the law.
  • Another law found in Genesis, the Law of Reproduction, states that everything reproduces after its kind.

Genesis 1:11 (ESV) — 11 And God said, “Let the earth sprout vegetation, plants yielding seed, and fruit trees bearing fruit in which is their seed, each according to its kind, on the earth.” And it was so.

  • You are not going to sow evil and produce blessing.
  • That would be like sowing apple seeds and getting oranges.
  • No, seed produces after it’s kind.
  • Apple seeds produce apples, and orange seeds produce oranges, and evil seed produces a harvest of evil.
  • Only the blessing of the Lord makes rich.

Proverbs 10:22 (ESV) — 22 The blessing of the LORD makes rich, and he adds no sorrow with it.

  • And, the blessing is only upon righteous seed.
  • So, this is how the law of sowing and reaping operates.
  • To avoid punishment, the Liar tries to alter the outcome of this law.
  • You’ve heard the expression, have your cake and eat it too, haven’t you?
  • That’s what’s happening with sowing trouble and by falsehood endeavoring to sidestep a lousy harvest.
  • With that thought, here’s the question of the day.
  • Is it possible to keep bad seed from sprouting up?
  • The answer to this is yes — to break the sowing and reaping cycle of evil — a sinner must come to Jesus — that is, receive the new birth via the shed blood of Jesus Christ.
  • The blood of Jesus Christ cleanses us one all sin.
  • When a man comes to Jesus, he begins sowing a different kind of seed and consequently receives a different kind of harvest — a harvest of righteousness.
  • What about a believer? — what if a child of God sows terrible seed?
  • You know it happens.
  • Well, this is where 1 John 1:9 comes in.

1 John 1:9 (ESV) — 9 If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.

The Principle of Sowing and Reaping Throughout the Ages

  • Here is the book of Proverbs illustrating this same principle of sowing and reaping.

Proverbs 22:8 (ESV) — 8 Whoever sows injustice will reap calamity, and the rod of his fury will fail.

Proverbs 11:18 (ESV) — 18 The wicked earns deceptive wages, but one who sows righteousness gets a sure reward.

  • You see, it’s in more than one place in the Word of God.
  • Here’s the principle in the Minor Prophets.

Hosea 10:12 (ESV) — 12 Sow for yourselves righteousness; reap steadfast love; break up your fallow ground, for it is the time to seek the LORD, that he may come and rain righteousness upon you.

Hosea 8:7 (ESV) — 7 For they sow the wind, and they shall reap the whirlwind…

  • Here’s the principle of sowing and reaping in the Major Prophets

Isaiah 3:10 (ESV) — 10 Tell the righteous that it shall be well with them, for they shall eat the fruit of their deeds.

Jeremiah 12:13 (ESV) — 13 They have sown wheat and have reaped thorns; they have tired themselves out but profit nothing. They shall be ashamed of their harvests because of the fierce anger of the LORD.”

  • What’s the lesson here for followers of Jesus?
  • Don’t play Satan the Liar’s lying game’ – expose yourself instead to the truth and stay on the right side of the Law of Sowing and Reaping.
  • You guys have a great God week, and we’ll see you next time for another edition of Light on Life.
