The will of God for your life is by far, of utmost importance. In fact, it may not be out of order to say that it is the single most important area in your walk with God. Our heart attitude must be one of constantly asking and seeking to ascertain what His will is in the areas with which we have to do. Here are some thoughts along this line.
Ephesians 6:5–6
5 Bondservants, obey your earthly masters with fear and trembling, with a sincere heart, as you would Christ, 6 not by the way of eye-service, as people-pleasers, but as bondservants of Christ, doing the will of God from the heart,
Spirit Life is an Inside Job
- Spirit life is to be lived from the inside out. Notice what Paul said, …doing the will of God from the heart
- The word ‘heart’ here is a noun not an adjective so do not think of the phrase as ‘do the will of God by putting your heart into it’.
- The word ‘heart’ here means location. In other words, do the will of God from your spirit.
- Live life out of your strong built up spirit
Romans 1:9 (ESV)
9 For God is my witness, whom I serve with my spirit in the gospel of his Son, that without ceasing I mention you
- While we are over here in Romans, let’s look at a verse that is going to help shed light on what is means to do the will of God from your heart.
Romans 12:1–2 (ESV)
1 I appeal to you therefore, brothers, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God, which is your spiritual worship. 2 Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect.
- Verse one, admonishes us to present our bodies – to a God like this. Verse two tells us how to do it.
- There two main verbs in this verse – conformed & transformed. Verbs are action words. These verbs are particular types of Greek verbs called imperatives.
God’s Will: Do Not Conform to this World
The words ‘conform’ or ‘transform’ are imperatives.
- There is a form of ‘the imperative’ that act as commandment verbs. They are verbs that tell you to do things in a commandment tone. In the Bible, this takes on a completely different level because God is the author of the Bible and so the author of the imperative. Depending on the context, you might think of imperatives then, as direct orders from the Head of the Church.
- Imperatives are commandments; they are not Sunday school suggestions.
- If you want to understand what conformed means, look at these Translations of Romans 12:2
Romans 12:2 (NLT)
“Don’t copy the behavior and customs of this world, but let God transform you into a new person by changing the way you think. Then you will learn to know God’s will for you, which is good and pleasing and perfect.”
Romans 12:2 (J.B. Phillips)
“Don’t let the world around you squeeze you into its own mold, but let God re-make you so that your whole attitude of mind is changed.”
What In the World Is The World?
- The world is a belief system
- It consists of:
- Ideas
- Opinions
- Maxims
- Standards
- Conclusions
- Thoughts
- Patterns
- Mannerisms
- Speech
- Expressions
- Styles
- Habits
- The danger area is where we allow this stuff from the outside to change our way of thinking and believing on the inside.
Five Big Bible Words You will Encounter if You are Serious about Doing God’s Will
- Consecration
- Obedience
- Reverence
- Waiting on God
- Unity
- Everything is about balance.
- Many modern day believers center up on using the Word of God to help their own money situation, health situation, personal relationships situation, trials and tribulations situation, and anything else that deals with well-being. If we constantly center-up on ourselves we will end up out of balance. Spiritual growth and development only occurs as remain balanced in the things of God.
- The will of God is one of the most important things on the planet! What else are we here for but to do His will, do His purpose, or do His plan?
- To continually access the will of God, you have to deal with these five big Bible words and none of these words focus on your personal comfort level!
- The only way that gets you there is when you sell out totally to God in these five areas.
- Let’s look at area one: consecration.
- Believers need to consecrate themselves completely.
- What does consecration mean?
- It means that you are willing to do whatever He wants you to do whenever He wants you to do it.
- It means going to Africa, for example, if He asks you to do it.
- Here in this verse, he is asking you not to conform to this world. You have to sell out to that or you will not fulfill the verse.
- There is a price to be paid in order to flow with God.
- Understand that the precious things of God have the same cost for every generation. The cost was the same to Paul as it is to you. The price to walk in God’s will was the same to John Wesley, Martin Luther, Albert Finney, and the martyrs of the church. The cost is and was the same to any other great man of God that you may know and admire. It has not changed.
- Do not ever forget that salvation is free (why believers are so over into these bless me areas – everyone likes the free stuff!) but discipleship will cost you everything.
- You have to maintain this heart attitude and constantly remind yourself of your commitment to God.
- Praying prayers of consecration as Jesus did in the garden when He said, ‘Not my will but yours be done’ should be the norm for us and will keep your heart in a tender place.
- Here is an example of a Consecration prayer prayed by a godly man of our generation.
- “Lord, I present myself unto You. May Your will be done in my life. May I never forget that I have surrendered all I am to You. I commit myself to be one whom You can use — consecrated and separated unto Your purposes. I’ll pay the price by denying the flesh. If You call me in the nighttime, I’ll get on my knees and pray. If I am never seen of men, and if I always work behind the scenes, still I will be faithful. I lay aside all personal ambition. I’ll be one who walks in the Spirit and in Your perfect will. In Jesus’ Name, Your will shall be wrought in my heart, in my life, and in my ministry.”
- The other four areas will be in a future post.
The Will of God Is The Prize
Connection between the will of God and purpose
- The will of God ties you to your purpose
- Your purpose ties you to your gift set (your talents your abilities)
- Your gift set ties you to your effectiveness for Jesus.
- When you are flowing in these places – there comes with effectiveness great joy.
- This area is covered up when we focus only on our needs. Real joy comes not from my needs being met but by being effective in getting, someone else’s needs met.
- When you are missing the will of God for your life, the opposite of this is true – that is you will experience ineffectiveness and lack of joy.
The Will of God and Spiritual DNA
You can get a hint of where you should be by looking at how God wired you.
- Two Ways God Wired You
- You are God – Wired – Physically
- Every believer has physical DNA
- He wired you with a certain personality and temperament.
- He wired you with certain likes and dislikes
You are God Wired – Spiritually
- Every Believer Has Spiritual DNA
- Spiritual gifting’s and equipment
- Your Spiritual DNA Operates Through Knowledge
- This is why we need mind renewal!
2 Peter 1:3 (ESV)
3 His divine power has granted to us all things that pertain to life and godliness, through the knowledge of him who called us to his own glory and excellence,
- The more you know – the more you grow
- This is what God is saying about your Spiritual DNA:
- If you understand what is in you
- If you give place to what is in you
- If you work with and develop and nurture that which is within you
- If you do it to such an extent that what is in you dominates your life,
- You will be extremely effective in your walk
- Physical DNA + Spiritual DNA Makes You Effective
- This combo makes you Unique
- This combo makes you Special
- This combo makes you Irreplaceable
- Nobody is wired like you are!
- That’s why it is carnal for you to try to copy someone else, you don’t have their wiring.
To dream of the person you would like to be is to waste the person you are.
Call to Action:
- If we put these things into operation, that is refuse to be molded by the world’s way of thinking and allow God’s way of thinking to permeate our being, we will walk in all the will of God and we will have God’s best for our life. This is some of what it means to do ‘Will of God from the Heart’.
